The Five Elements

Picture
The Five Element Tradition is an ancient school of thought of Chinese Medicine that encompasses seeing the phenomenal world of nature as being governed by five dynamic forces that are symbolized by five elemental energies that generate each other in a cycle of co-creation and community: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood.  These forces also work within every human being and the Five Element school of acupuncture involves treating imbalances in the natural cycle embodied in the human being. Five Element acupuncture treatments are profound as they address the true root mechanism of disease: elemental constitutional imbalance.

The Five Elements touches on the essence of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which is helping individuals and communities to harmonize with the rhythms of nature.  This is where TCM expands to a much broader field than simply medicine, offering insight into the wider realms of philosophy and the art of living.  Moreover, in our present time of great disharmony with our natural environment, The Five Elements provides humanity with profound wisdom of how to address this rift between us and the ecological spirit of Earth.  Ultimately, ever aspiring to find deeper harmony with nature  is seen as the very foundation of health and longevity.

The Five Elements are also known as the Five Phases because it gets closer to what the ancients believed: that the elements are rhythms or dynamic currents of expression of the spirit of nature, conjoined in a generative and controlling cycle that finds each element interdependently linked to each other.  The Five Elements pervades all realms of life, from seasonal shifts to the colour spectrum to personality traits and even notions of virtue and ethics.  Ultimately, the Five Elements presents us with a simple yet profound system of perceiving and harmonizing with the world around us that is based on naturalist principles.  What could be more beautiful than realizing that by seeking harmony with nature we achieve our most vital health?  In this way, the Five Elements offers a way out of the madness of environmental destruction and dystopia, guiding us on a powerful pathway of healing inextricably linked with the Earth.

"How can you not know that if one suffers, the whole consciousness of the Earth takes partakes of that?  And when one rejoices, the whole takes part.  Love all of life and become one with it.  All of life is a part of you..."
